90 hours of Community Health & my paper-writing...
Hello! For these last few weeks, I’ve had a really really crazy schedule with nonstop clinical-work-class-clinical-work-class, etc.. and with lots and lots of assignments to do in between. I’m graduating in less than one month.. and thankfully I haven’t caught senioritis quite yet! Gotta finish strong! These next few weeks will zoom by, and the end will come before you...

Receiving gifts.
It’s been about a few weeks or months (I don’t even remember anymore) since the last time I’ve written, and it’s already the 6th week of Spring Quarter, meaning that I only have 5 more academic weeks of my college career left before me. Ahhhhhhhh! These past few weeks/months have been quite crazy, as evidenced by my chronic lack of posting. I apologize to all my readers....

Chickysoup
Ever since I started cooking, I always made chicken soup with chicken broth because for some silly reason I thought that was the only way to make chicken soup. (Sad, I know) Last week I went to Ralphs to buy some groceries and for some strange reason I was really craving chicken soup. I went over to the soupy slash brothy section and found my little box of chicken broth and it was so...

Mommy Day
My mom was gone for a retreat these last few days, so after small group last night I rushed home to spend time and ‘baby’-sit my sister. She’s 17, but still a baby to me! Today I had to fill in the big shoes my mom wear on a daily basis: setting up the table for meals, cleaning after, doing laundry for the family, cleaning after the dog (ugh..), taking my sister to school, giving...

My exceeding Joy
Whew, what a busy spring break! With goals to accomplish, meetings to attend, trainings to undergo, chapters to review, lessons to read, classes to prepare for and money to make- this spring break is quite an eventful week. I really can’t believe it’s only Monday! Last Saturday, I had my first Hospice re-training! After a year of emailing back-and-forth with the director of...

I love Spring... Break Goals
Happy Spring Break! Finals week has come and gone and this quarter flew so quick I barely remember details of it. Not only is this my last (official) spring break from school ever, but when we come back it will be my last quarter of college. Where has the time gone?! OMG… I love all kinds of endings and beginnings. and I love breaks. Although a majority if not all of my breaks will be full...

Monday thanks-givings
Today was such a sweet and wonderful day. Today was the day of my final and the final due date of my paper, and now I am done with that for life.. Hooray! There are so many things to be joyful about, so much to be thankful for! Here are just a few.. 1) Tracy Today was the first day of finals week and it was also Tracy’s 22nd birthday. Tracy’s birthday always falls on finals week,...

Blurry blurbs on all I've missed..
A normal day for me. —- Some days I have to pack a life’s worth of things to help me get through the day. Raw broccoli and carrot sticks, washed apples, can of soup and a few water bottles carried along with my bags of books, folders, papers and things. Today wasn’t that kind of day. No books, no cans of soup. Just a folder full of research articles about blood clots and...

Start of the hunt
After this week, I am only 1 quarter away from graduation. Weiiiiird. Time flies. So crazy to think that 11 quarters have already gone by and I am at the end of my 11th cliff. One more to go and no more school for a few years. Tis’ a strange thought slash feeling indeed. As the end of college creeps upon us senior nursing students, there has been a great sense of tension and anxiety...

Nights. Lasts. Plans and the Money-saving...
The midterm I thought I was going to have last week is actually tomorrow, but at this point my brain is fried and I can no longer input any more information into my wee-little brain. But life goes on, and sleep awaits me! It’s a strange feeling to know that today and tomorrow are the only days of this week that I will be awake in the daytime.. Starting Thursday, my night shift run starts...

Love, it's a special day
Click here to listen to a cute Valentines day song by Kina Grannis :o) — Not only was yesterday Valentines day, but it was me & Eugene’s one year (dating) anniversary. It’s a confusing place to be because I hear once you’re engaged your dating anniversary doesn’t matter anymore. So crazy how much can change in just a year’s time. Exactly 365 days ago,...

Strength in my weakness.
The month of February is going to be the craziest month ever. It’s only the 10th of the month, but it’s alreay been the craziest month ever. Starting this week, I’ll be having ~three 12-hour night shifts a week in addition to my two days of class. Three night shifts this week, four next, and three more the week after that. Thankfully I’m geting used to the grind of...

Sleepy
Today is Monday of Week 5, which marks almost the half-way point through the entire school year. I am almost half done with the last year of my entire college career. Crazy. This was supposedly supposed to be a easier slash more “chill” quarter, but I don’t think I’ve felt this busy in a while. The combination of night shifts for work and night shifts for school have...

What is the greatest hindrance to the gospel...
A couple of years ago I was asked to submit an article to Compassion International’s magazine. The article was to answer a single question: What is the greatest hindrance to the gospel today? I stumbled across that article today and thought I would share it with you. You know the oft-told story, I am sure. G.K. Chesterton, along with other prominent authors of his day, was asked by The Times to...

BOASTING ONLY IN THE CROSS.
What in the world does he mean when he says ‘boast only in the cross’? Here’s what I think it means— for the Christian, all other boasting should be a boasting in the cross. In other words, boast only in the cross means, bring all other boasting under that boasting and make that boasting expressed through this boasting. Now what in the world is that, what does that mean?...

Looking past what the eyes see
Working with sick people is hard. Death is no stranger, and thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours seem to go spent trying to merely prolong life or postpone death for just a while more. It’s hard walking into a patient room and seeing a patient completely stripped of all clothing with just a towel covering what’s necessary to preserve their dignity. It’s heart-breaking to...

The life of a night owl
So over these past 7 months I’ve gotten used to the graveyard shifts at work, but I found out two weeks ago that I also have night shifts for my clinical rotations for school. Poop. As much as my body is adjusting to this sleep during the day, work during the night lifestyle, it’s still pretty hard to force your body’s biological clock to work backwards, but I’m sure this...

Minute-by-minute
Today I had an appointment at the UCI Student Health center to get a recommended immunization. My appointment was at 9:15 but I didn’t leave my house until 8:55 because I took a bit too long getting ready and packing for the day. With my eye jumping back and forth from the road to the digital clock of my car, I was so afraid I was going to miss my appointment. Being late would mean I...

Newly-discovered and newly-treasured gems of 2010
This is long over-due, but I feel if I don’t do this now I will never do it. So, here I go.. Happy 2011! This has definitely been a year to testify of how faithful, loving, good and sovereign God is. This past year has probably got to be the hardest, most challenging but most joyful year of my entire life. It was in these hard times that I learned to rely on God for the strength to rejoice...

New Year
O LORD, Length of days does not profit me except the days are passed in thy presence, in thy service, to thy glory. Give me a grace that precedes,       follows,              guides,                        sustains,                                 sanctifies,                                      aids every hour, that I may not be one moment apart from thee, but may rely on thy Spirit to supply...

Will we be ready?
At CCM retreat last week, our discussion was led to the topic of the second coming of Christ. We were talking about how this truth can so often become such an obscure idea to us that we don’t perceive it to be “news”. We base alot of our lives around news all the time…It’s been raining all week, and the weather forecast says that it will rain again tomorrow- so as...

Subway, U-turns and the Sovereignty of God
I love Subway. Yesterday I decided not to go to my usual Subway shop but opted to go to one closer to Hoag. I walked in and ordered my sandwich and the cashier told me that they wouldn’t take the temporary debit card. (I had to get a new card because someone in Moscow used my card to borrow redbox movies…) *Drats! the one time I don’t bring cash..There was an ATM machine...

Today was my last day of Pediatrics.
Throughout my rotation at CHOC, I’ve learned 5 valuable things. 1) Pediatrics is not for me. Maybe one day, but not today. I love kids, but seeing sick kids is too much. and there is more time and energy that goes to taking care of families than there is time to take care of the hospitalized child. Too much. 2) Kids are resilient. They may have 5 IV bags hanging above their head, a chest...

Dear Mr. Flu,
I don’t know how to bring this up to you, but I feel I must. It’s been too much and too long. I know you want to stay, but I plead with you.. I think we are to go our separate ways. You may thank me someday, you know. I was supposed to finish finals on Wednesday this year, but because of you I have to wait til Friday. I have one more clinical rotation to go to and I have two night...

And He hears even our simplest prayers..
So these last 5 weeks I’ve had two clinicals a week, both usually starting ~6:30 to 6:45 am. I usually like waking up about two hours before it starts so I can grab a cup of coffee and read & pray before I start my day. The past 3 weeks have been pretty crazy and I haven’t been able to wake up in time to read. 7 loud alarms would blow up in my ear in the morning and I would sleep...

The discipline of work.
There is no such thing as Christian work. That is, there is no work in the world which is, in and of itself, Christian. Christian work is any kind of work, from cleaning a sewer to preaching a sermon, that is done by a Christian and offered to God. This means that nobody is excluded from serving God. It means there is no job in the world that needs to be boring or useless. A Christian finds...

Critical care by day, Pediatrics by night.
(Photo from google.com)  I. Love. Critical. Care. Today I was in the ICU unit and my patient had come in last night because he had a heart attack. He’s been hospitalized 5 times this year. Heart problems run in the family. It was his wife’s birthday today. They’ve been in love for 42 years. She was his first girlfriend in high school. He likes drinking Coke. He used to like...

6. Cute, round, smiley faces of oncology kids at CHOC to start my weekend 7. Being able to spend a Saturday morning with 20 couples preparing for the birth(s) of their child.. and the willing dad who wore a pregger’s suit for the entire morning to better empathize with his wife :o) 8. A sunny day to study in a rustle-bustley coffeeshop 9. A variety of school supplies 10. The...

A time for everything. but who has time?
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:  a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;   a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;   a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;   a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather...

Sharing the joys of today..
…because there’s so much to be thankful for everyday. 1. The warm feeling you get as you walk down the chilly produce section of Ralph’s 2. Three Tupperware containers full of chicken soup for the week 3. A morning at Starbucks with a loving sister 4. A boyfriend who ventures out to find what coffee shop you’re studying in when you email him about feeling a little...
